Whenever you have some issues with your Mac, there are many things you can try for every problem that could be bothering you. You can restart your Mac, close some apps, uninstall them, and try additional tips for particular issues. However, if nothing seems to be working, one of the options you have is SMC reset. By resetting SMC (system management controller), you can eliminate issues related to fans, camera, battery, power, etc. Let’s see how to perform the SMC reset on a Mac.

How to perform SMC reset

The steps are not the same for every Mac out there. They depend on the battery.

If your Mac has a non-removable battery, do the following:

  • Plug in the power cord to a power source.
  • Press the Shift+Control+Option keys located on the left side and the power button – all at the same time
  • Release the power button and the other keys all at once
  • Press the power button to turn your Mac on.

If your computer has a removable battery (older models), do the following:

  • If the power adapter is connected to your Mac, disconnect it.
  • Now remove the battery from your Mac
  • Press and hold the power button and hold it for five seconds
  • Now release the button
  • Put the battery back in its place
  • Reconnect the power adapter
  • Press the power button to turn your Mac on.

If you have a Mac Mini, Mac Pro, or iMac, follow the steps below:

  • Turn off your Mac
  • Unplug the power cable and wait for 15 to 20 seconds
  • Plug the power cord back in
  • Turn your Mac on.

As you can see, performing a SMC reset is not complicated at all, and it can solve a variety of issues. If you have tried other solutions and nothing has worked, you will probably want to make sure to try them.
