What’s So Interesting About iFixit Teardown iMac 21 4K, Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad 2, and Magic Mouse 2

As a reference source for unauthorised device service, iFixit always become the first to teardown the new devices, including Apple devices. This week, they were excited to share the information related to the internal hardware and how to  teardown iMac 21 4K, Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad 2, and Magic Mouse 2. Here are the highlight of the interesting things founded on each new Apple device:

iMac 21 inch 4K display

  1. The entire design, ports configuration, and the model number are same with its prior. The difference is the new EMC number: 2889.
  2. The way to open the iMac is also the same with the previous one, they use a special adhesive, which is strong but removable by using a special slice tool.
  3. The retina LCD display is made by LG, the same manufacture for the previous generation.
  4. The Fusion Drive in this model has a significantly smaller flash partition than the previous generation, only 24GB flash storage, while before Apple used 32Gb of flash storage inside.
  5. The Fusion Drive connector is again missing from the logic board, killing all hope of storage hacking.
  6. The CPU is soldered to the logic board, and cannot be replaced or upgraded.
  7. RAM is still soldered to the logic board with the manufacture from Samsung, model K4E6E304EE-EGCF 16 Gb LPDDR3 1867 MHz SDRAM.
  8. The antenna cables are now fastened to the Airport card with new screw-secured cable clamps, while it’s not happened before.

Magic Keyboard

  1. New model number: A1644
  2. the lightning port serve two purposes quick and easy: pairing to your Mac over a cable, and recharging the integrated battery.
  3. The new keyboard adopts the slightly revised layout of the 2015 MacBook keyboard including full-size left and right arrow keys, and function keys, but this is not a butterfly keys mechanism.
  4. The Magic Keyboard matches the Magic Trackpad 2 as well, with similar slim profile.
  5. Tweezing out a rubber foot reveals a slot that holds the foot in place. Almost a screw! But not. This is just some folded plastic.
  6. The entire lower panel is glued in place, need to heat-and-pry it.
  7. The battery is a snap to disconnect, no solder here. The 2.98 Wh battery has less than half the capacity of the 6.55 Wh battery in the iPhone 6s.

Magic Trackpad 2

  1. The new model number: A1535
  2. The Lightning port serves a dual purpose, pairing with your Mac via USB, and charging the trackpad’s integrated battery.
  3. Excessive use of strong adhesive makes it very difficult to remove the rear panel, hindering access to every internal component.
  4. The battery has 7.65 Whr 2024 man Lithium-ion polymer battery.
  5. The Lightning connector cable is not soldered and removable.

The Magic Trackpad 2 Repairability Score: 3 out of 10


Magic Mouse 2

  1. The new model number: A1657.
  2. The uncomfortable thing is, the placement of the lightning port on the bottom, so the Magic Mouse 2 is temporary useless when wired.
  3. The entire design is the same with the previous generation, and almost cannot be distinguished.
  4. The is no LED status.
  5. The Apple logo and printing is now in black color, while previously in white.
  6. The Lightning connector is soldered to the battery cable.
  7. The battery has 7.28 Wh, 1986 mph li-ion, which is 9% better than the iPhone 6s’s battery.

The Magic Mouse 2 Repairability Score: 2 out of 10
