Secretly, Apple has released a new app called Indoor Survey for iPhone. This app was found for the first time by Steven Troughton-Smith. “Well this is an Apple app I’ve not seen before!”, says Troughton-Smith. The Indoor Survey app was briefly advertised on the mapsconnect.apple.com. There is written: “Indoor: Sign up to find out more about how to get indoor positioning at your venue”, and there also a sign up link.
Today, we can find this app on the App Store on iOS device or on the iTunes application. Here is the app description:
Enable indoor positioning within a venue using the Indoor Survey App. By dropping “points” on a map within the Survey App, you indicate your position within the venue as you walk through. As you do so, the Indoor Survey App measures the radio frequency (RF) signal data and combines it with an iPhone’s sensor data. The end result is indoor positioning without the need to install special hardware.
The additional note from Apple says that the application uses the GPS continuously, so it might drain the battery. From the information on the App Store, this application has been updated on October 28 2015 and requires iOS 9 to be installed. At this moment, its screenshot is limited only for the sign up appearance and there is no additional images about how to use it. The Indoor Survey app is specially made for iPhone and there is no iPad optimized version available yet, but you still can install it on all iOS devices including iPad with 1x or 2x app mode. We will try it later to review it, or you want to try to download, Indoor Survey is a free app.
